Preview of 8/6/98 Phantasmagoria show

Shows You Would Hate to Miss!
- Thursday, August 6, ADAM WEST w/ Polyplush Cats & Betty Blue at Phantasmagoria (11319 Elkin St., Wheaton, MD; 301-949-8886), 8 p.m. If you clicked onto Washington and read the Jake Starr interview, then you'll probably be wanting to go see his band Adam West play at Phantasmagoria. Adam West is good ol' hard rock. It's fast, slamming with energy, guitars blaring, drums and bass pounding, and best of all, Jake's great vocals are strong and release just as much energy as the band is cranking out, but they're not all fakey gravely sounding. I hate when a band feels like they have to sing like the Devil or like a biker on PCP to make you think they're bad-ass. Don't get me wrong, if you like hearing the Devil sing, I got no problem with that (and if you know the Devil personally you don't really need to tell him about what I said about his vocals). As for Jake, don't get me wrong, he's got an edge to his voice and sings hard, but he's singing, not yelling. That's my only point. And the bands been around for a while, if you know what I mean. After a band puts in a few good years of hard playing, they get the bugs worked out. And what's up with Phantasmagoria? I guess it never went away, but all of a sudden I keep hearing about great shows there. Nice job.
